Thames Enterprise Park is being created on the former site of Coryton Oil Refinery. Commissioned in 1953, it remained the south east’s largest independent oil refinery until its closure in 2012. The site employed thousands of local people and refined millions of gallons of crude oil into petrol, diesel, kerosene and other fuels.
Time and money invested in Thames Enterprise Park will result in this industrial legacy site being scrubbed clean, starting anew and accommodating a variety of job-creating businesses. However, not every element of the site’s former life will be erased: while of one of the refinery chimneys was demolished in November 2016, another will be retained to serve as a striking visual landmark.
